Judging UST EcoSoc’s ABAKADA: A Film Contest
Yesterday, the UST Economics Society (EcoSoc) held a documentary film contest at the Rizal Auditorium in St. Raymund’s building entitled “ABAKADA: Salamin ng Edukasyon sa Pilipinas” and I was chosen as one of the three judges! All thanks to the referral of my good friend, Sheila Amorsolo. The other two judges were Catherine Recio, management head of TOMCAT (Tomasino Cable Television) and Chester Fabian, a cum laude graduate of UST Communication Arts and is currently working in ABS-CBN.

We were to judge and score documentary films which broadly revolved on the topic: education in the Philippines. Each class from both the junior and senior years of the economics department of the college of commerce were supposed to pass one entry but not everyone was able to. There were a total of four documentaries and each had their own way of conveying their message as well as execution.
At first, I thought we were going to critique the documentaries presented (which would be awesome if we did). If ever, laying out constructive criticisms coming from the management head of the university tv broadcasting unit, a cum laude from the course specializing in the said field, and a fellow business student who stepped in the world of video production, would help the participants as well as the audience produce better films in their next projects. But alas, there was only so much time allotted for the program.
After the EcoSoc organizers tallied the scores, the grand prize hailed to 4E4 with an entry relating to SpED or special education for the handicapped. Congratulations! I found their work the one with the most content as they portrayed the purpose of their film very well: they identified their subject, its condition in society in both the point of view of the goverment and the people, spotted the problems, offered solutions to those problems and viewed things in a micro and macro perspective. There was no bias. For Cath, they were the most creative as they treated their video in a way that the handicapped themselves can appreciate the video by including subtitles and detailed pictures.
